On December 6th and 7th 2018, the European Commission has held a two-day event to take stock of this pilot project with the objective to share with a wider audience the lessons learned and to discuss the future needs of SMEs in their progress towards the circular economy:
“SMEs are the backbone of the European economy. If they want to survive and prosper they certainly have to become also the backbone of a sustainable, low-carbon circular economy. Indeed, given their economic importance and their accumulated environmental impact, there cannot be an effective transition towards a circular economy without European SMEs.
Based on this understanding, in 2017, the European Commission has started a pilot project financed by the European Parliament with the title “Boosting the Circular Economy among SMEs in Europe”. The project delivered capacity building for selected SME support organisations, green solution providers and regional authorities on circular economy, resource efficiency and eco-innovation.
The target audience of the event are interested circular companies, circular solution providers, SMEs, corporates, SME support organisations, regional and local authorities, investors, banks and funding agencies. The participants of the pilot project will also attend.
The event included round-tables, workshops, networking and interactive sessions that directly helped:
SMEs and corporates to boost their business and become more circular;
SME support organisations (e.g. industry associations, chambers of commerce) to deliver services to help SMEs adopt circular economy practices;
and local-and regional authorities to boost the transition towards a circular economy in their region.”
